Details: Distinct from a traditional academic scholarship, this initiative provides funding for each successful recipient to co-design a personalised 12-month leadership pathway plan with the Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation. This may include options such as mentoring, executive and governance training, and conference and exchange opportunities (refer to Guidelines).
The scholarship is open to applicants from across Australia, with up to three scholarships available. Applicants from remote and rural areas are welcomed.

Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation offers the Lowitja O’Donoghue Excellence in Leadership – Public Sector Scholarship as the prestigious inaugural initiative of its new Leadership program.
The Leadership Scholarship for professionals in the Public Sector exists because Dr O’Donoghue spent her life demonstrating that influence is forged through action, service and lived experience – not credentials alone. Reflecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, being, doing, and leading, the program gives recipients agency over their own development rather than requiring them to fit an existing mould.
Established in 2023, the flagship Foundation’s Nursing Scholarship Program has supported five graduates, including its first Enrolled Nurse, Registered Nurse, Doctor of Aboriginal Health, Master of Public Health, and Master of Indigenous Business Leadership. A further fourteen scholars from regions across Australia, including Arnhem Land, are currently undertaking nursing qualifications through the program.
Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation is committed to investing in the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders by creating self-determined pathways that honour Dr O’Donoghue’s extraordinary legacy. Through scholarships in Nursing and Public Sector Leadership, the Foundation recognises and celebrates the trailblazing career pathways she forged for future generations to follow.
