Who is it for? 

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who are new to using data for research and wish to learn about the importance of adopting a strengths-based approach to storytelling through statistics, while taking ownership of data. 

How long does it take? 

The course takes around five hours to complete, depending on how deeply you explore the resources offered. As a self-directed online course, you can complete it at your own pace.

There are no prerequisites for this course. After this course, you may wish to undertake a virtual or face-to-face data foundations workshop offered by Lowitja Institute. Please contact learning@lowitja.org.au for information.  

Course outline 

There are eight modules:

  1. Data types, framing and the power of statistics 
  1. Surveys to datasets 
  1. Continuous data analysis 
  1. Categorical data analysis 
  1. Summarising data 
  1. Research 
  1. Wrap-up 

Some of the topics covered in the short course include: 

  • key terms commonly used in analysing health data 
  • how to apply data concepts such as range and standard deviation 
  • how to create and format basic spreadsheets 
  • how to perform simple calculations using formulas and functions 
  • using charts and graphs to visually represent data 
  • how to manage and safeguard data responsibly.

This course also includes access to two new online resources:  

  • Community data literacy: Terminology 
  • Community data literacy: Excel skills
