Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue did not wait for permission, for conditions to improve, or for the moment to be right. She led through action, guided by purpose – demonstrating that meaningful change begins with a single courageous act.
 
Removed from her mother at two, and told she would never amount to anything, Dr O’Donoghue became the first Aboriginal nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the first Aboriginal person to address the United Nations, led negotiations to establish the Native Title Act, and was named 1984 Australian of the Year and a National Living Treasure.
 
She dedicated her life to opening doors for others and the Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation exists to keep them open.
 
Every August – from 1 August recognising her birthday as Lowitja O’Donoghue Day<\/strong> – we are asking everyone to commit to their own One Act of Courage. And we are asking those who can, to fund the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders who will follow in her footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lowitja O’Donoghue Foundation funds scholarships, pathways and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in nursing and the public sector, continuing Lowitja’s legacy by creating opportunities for others to lead, learn and thrive.

*The Lowitja O\u2019Donoghue Foundation is not yet established as a legally autonomous entity and receives donations under an auspice agreement with Lowitja Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
