Mapping pathways [systems, processes, structures and relationships] that contribute to improving the culture of hospitals for Aboriginal patients
This project was a sub-project within the broader scope of CRCAH work known as Improving the Culture of Hospitals. It was a collaborative project between the AHCSA/RAH and the CRCAH, aiming to record activity undertaken by AHCSA around implementation of the RAH Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan, which focused on improving hospital culture for Aboriginal patients. The information generated by the study fed into quality improvement initiatives at the RAH, as well as into the CRCAH Improving the Culture of Hospitals project.
Key outcomes included:
- documenting current protocols
- documenting the (cultural reform) strategy within the hospital, so it can be used to create increased trust with Aboriginal community and patients using the RAH
- documenting short term outcomes associated with implementing the RAH Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan
- identifying gaps or areas to be strengthened through subsequent work
- assisting with hospital performance management in relation to dealings with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including influencing service delivery; particularly the transition from presentation to admission as an inpatient, and in relation to the hospital interface with the primary health care sector.
A qualitative case study approach was used to document activity in relation to recording the implementation activity in the first year of the RAH Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan.
